THE MEDIEVAL MASQUE
FRIDAY APRIL 9th, 2010 - 8:30pm
in the Maryland Ballroom - BUY TICKETS

Tonight, we evoke a dramatic world lit only by fire, a realm of extreme polarities: darkness and light, life and death, honor and revenge, high thoughts and bawdy humor. Come as lord or lady, knight or serf, faerie or mortal, wizard or commoner and raise a glass and dance to the music of the internationally acclaimed German medieval band, Estampie, in a very rare performance in the US.

ESTAMPIE
The celebrated German band ESTAMPIE (named after a medieval dance and musical form) was founded in 1985 by Sigrid ’ÄúSyrah’Äù Hausen, Michael Popp and Ernst Schwindl and is one of the most accomplished and acclaimed medieval bands in the world. Musically the group can rightly be described as ’Äúmedieval’Äù, though they are also working with elements of Pop and World Music. Estampie is internationally known for presenting spellbinding performances using ancient instruments without electronic amplification. A compilation CD celebrating their 20 year career was released in 2007 by Dancing Ferret Discs.

GYPSY NOMADS
New York duo, The Gypsy Nomads, channel the spirit of the old world gypsy sound, lacing it with a cabaret, celtic and neo-medieval flavor rooted in folk and the vineyards of southern France. The duo features bilingual French-born British chanteuse Samantha Stephenson on vocals, percussion and drums and songwriter and veteran of the punk scene Scott Helland on guitar, drums, and guitar loops. Together Samantha and Scott create a compelling onstage chemistry and their music is a lively and animated tribute to the free spirit lifestyle. The show is all about feeling good and their flair for the theatrical makes them hypnotic to watch. The Gypsy Nomads will open the Medieval Masque with a special themed set.
